FAQs about women’s tennis camps

The difference between tennis camps and tennis schools

Depending on where you are with your tennis, you might be considering both women’s tennis camps and tennis schools. Here are some distinctions to keep in mind between the two.

You can find information on college tennis camps online, and we highly recommend that you research any potential camp in depth before you sign up for it. You should ask questions like:

While you have the choice of attending women’s tennis camps that might last a couple hours each day or overnight for a week at a time (which can be a great chance to experience what life is like on a college campus), some players might also be interested in tennis schools (e.g. IMG Academy). At tennis schools, women’s tennis players receive in-depth instruction in the sport while also preparing for college in a preparatory school environment. Typically, tennis schools offer low student-to-faculty and player-to-coach ratios—but a variety of factors may weigh in on whether tennis schools, as opposed to college tennis camps, will be right for your family.

College tennis camps, clinics and showcases

Some of the specified types of college tennis camps and similar events are prospect camps, clinics, and showcases.

In tennis prospect camps, coaches evaluate tennis recruits. Generally, these only include NCAA tennis coaches from the institution that is hosting the college tennis camp. In most cases, about three-quarters of the time that players spend there are evaluations with the remaining quarter spent on training. Do note that they evaluate your demeanor along with other factors in addition to your ability on the court.

Tennis clinics tend to have the reverse focus with about three-quarters of your time there is spent on training with the other quarter on being evaluated. As a result, these types of college tennis camps tend to be quite valuable for improving your skills as they generally consist of one-on-one settings. Some specialized clinics can focus on just one aspect of your game such as forehands, backhands, or volleys.

Tennis showcases consist of competitive environments in which you will play other top players and showcase your skills to NCAA tennis coaches. Do also consider that how you play and the professionalism that you show on and off the court will often get back to coaches who have you on their lists of tennis recruits even if they are not there. Conversely, some of the most prestigious showcases will have NCAA tennis coaches from dozens of the top programs in attendance.

In the vast majority of cases, you do not need to be invited to these events to take part. However, a few significant exceptions include some elite showcases; some of those, you will need an invite to participate. If one or more interest you, contact them and see if you have a tennis resume of high enough quality to be invited.

Major women’s tennis tournaments

Tennis tournaments provide recruits opportunities to play year-round and range from single-day to multi-day events with both singles and doubles competitive play. When selecting which tournaments a recruit will attend, she should evaluate how well her skill level matches with the competition and what tournament college coach typically attend. Once a recruit has identified a list of tournaments that meet her needs, it’s time to register.

After a recruit registers for a tennis tournament, she should notify college coaches that she will be competing at the tournament. When the tournament is over, recruits should update their NCSA Recruiting Profile with any new achievements or stats and reach out to college coaches to let them know about their tournament performance.

Having a hard time selecting a tennis tournament to attend? We suggest starting with junior tournaments hosted by the United States Tennis Association (USTA). The USTA is dedicated to the growth of tennis at all levels and offers a variety of tennis tournaments where recruits can gain valuable competition experience against top talent. Visit the USTA website to learn more about the USTA’s junior tournaments

What to expect at a tennis camp

The specifics of your camping experience will vary depending on the camp. However, in general, you will be evaluated after arriving to ensure that the ensuing lessons fit your ability level and style. During the camp, you will receive instruction as well as play matches. Some camps provide videotape analysis so that you can better improve your form. Team building is often incorporated, which is especially crucial to those heading to college to become part of tennis teams there.
